On my daily scouring of local music messageboards, I saw a post on TheShizz.org from rickyrodd, a member of the local indie band, Race You There, where he explains some of the details of their latest video, Starcrossed which was made entirely using Google maps. "It took over 60 hours of work and is made up of over 2500 frames." Very nice work on the video, and not a bad song either. |

So, uh, for some reason I've been having a bitch of a time connecting the domain name to this Google Sites blog, so I sort of just gave up on it for a while. 57 days to be exact. I just set up a blogspot profile to see if I could maybe move this blog over there, and low and behold, now the domain that insisted on being broken for over two months magically works. I could probably blame godaddy for this, but I'll just chock it up to a lesson learned, and start writing my Dear John letter to them right now. In celebration of the return of my geek blog that I hope to be updating now more than ever, I leave you with a video that parallels my struggle with the 2010 economy thru the eyes of a Web Designer. Some days you just want to give up and stop trying so hard to do the right thing. Too often, I feel like I'm fighting the good fight for a lost cause; whether it's work, hobbies, or personal relationships. I'm a nostalgic guy, and I have always forged forward on the notion that while sticking to my principals and beliefs, I can always try and "do better". That in the end, in certain situations, I know what it takes to get the job done. But sometimes, getting the job done can get a little dirty. Sometimes playing the diplomat doesn't work. Sometimes, you need to pop a little spinach and kick some ass. For me, this has been one of those weeks. Coincidentally, my friend Brett just happened to post this great clip from one of my all-time favorite movies, which unknowingly, fits in perfectly with the kind of bullshit I've had to deal with this week. It reminded me of the one guy who could always take care of the hard business that others couldn't. The guy that's not afraid to roll up his sleeves and fight for the truths that glimmer in his one eye like the sun rising over the open sea. The guy that would always tell you the truth, and do whatever it takes to get the job done. I wish, at the very least, I worked with Popeye. That way, I know I could always have someone to count on to get the job done right the first time. Until they hire him, I guess have to remain being him. The world needs more Popeyes. |
As if it were a horde of flesh-eating zombies bursting through my front door, the third installment of Max Brooks' zombie novels is here, and I didn't even know it was coming. The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks. If you are any fan of stories of the undead, and haven't read any of Brooks' incredible zombie survival novels, you may as well be amember of the walking dead yourself. Genius writing runs vibrantly through this family, as Max is the son of brilliant comedian writer/actor/director, Mel Brooks. I've devoured Max's two previous novels, The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead and World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, which I wrote a review for on spawn.com several years ago. Unlike its predecessors, this one is a graphic novel, and it looks sick. Here's a digital preview i swiped from the book's promo site. I just ordered my copy from Amazon, and noticed they have some pretty great prices on new and used versions of the book starting around $9. Next to Kirkman's The Walking Dead and Ennis' Crossed, Brooks' zombie novels are easily some of the best zombie tales I've ever read. I will always buy this guy's books. I highly suggest picking one of them up for yourself. The book's promo site, recordedattacks.com, has a bunch of great downloads, too, like desktops, screen savers, and preview chapters to read. While I was searching for cool zombie pictures, I found this piece by artist Dan Luvisi that was created as concept art for the upcoming World War Z film based off the book. You can definitely count on finding out more info about that as soon as it becomes public.

Upon further research into the 8-bit majestry of Wizwars, I checked out his myspace page, where he links to www.xocmusic.com, where you can download tons of free 8-bitesque music. Free music is never a bad thing, but it's not the point of this post. This guy took his original NES and turned it into a fully functional electric guitar; the NES Paul. Could that possibly get any cooler??

So, I'm pretty old these days, and I really don't get out a fraction of the percentage that I used to in my 20's, but I continue to keep my ear close to underground music in my involvement with AZPunk.com. Last week, a local community music message board, TheShizz.org had it's 2nd annual Shizzfest event featureing tons and tons of awesome local musicians. Unfortunately I didn't get to attend this show, but as I scan the innernets for a recap on the event, I ran across this video of what seems to be one of my people composing music on what looks like a Gameboy. Discovery Channel kinda freaks me out a little. It's easily the #1 watched network channel on my TV, and I may or may not have a non-homosexual bromantic fetish with Man vs. Wild, but every time I turn it on, I swear to God it's broadcasting the nightmares I had the night before. Last night, DC previewed it's new show that's destined to be a hit in my brain, "Monster Bug Wars!". They even left the "!" in the title to imply the intense importance of this program. Discovery describes the show, "Each day bugs battle it out in nature and Monster Bug Wars! will show you these battles up close and personal. Discover the Preying Mantis, Redback Spider, Giant Centipede, King Cricket, and more - as they battle each other for a fight to the death!" ...you has me at "bugs battle" Unfortunately, I guess this show is too virgin to actually have some clips online, so I'll post the next best thing from the almighty japanesebugfights.com. For a couple issues, around #116, I read some of Witchblade. I'd never be considered a fan, still not, but reading a couple issues got me familiar with Stjepan Sejic's digital painting. Today I realized that, mistakenly, I had left Orko off my list of people that I want to fight (silly me). Google, you fantastic geek of a wet dream, you never cease to amaze me! I can not only manage my entire life using your awesome little web tools like Docs, Desktop, Mail, Notebook & Sketchup, but now I get a free blog?? SO COOL!!! 
As a web designer, I spend 99.98% of my life on the internet. Most of the time I'm working, so I've never really had any interest in making a blog. But as I browse the links above my gmail, as I often find new and exciting surprises up there, what is this..? Sites? Google Sites? I must investigate. And here I am. Now I have a new blog thanks to the wonderful, innovative, ever-expanding, all-powerful Google. Everytime I find a new Google toy, it's like I'm 6 years old and it's new cartoon day. (That's what I used to call Saturdays). Thank you Google for giving a grown-up kid a new cartoon day again. |
I had to take a break from Spidey after the One More Day debaucle. I felt that we needed our space. I had to quit reading the title about a year ago, because after the One More Day saga, I wasn't about to hop on board with the direction it was going story-wise. To be completely honest, after his flip flopping in the Civil War, and ever-so-popular "reboot" of Brand New Day, Spidy needed to hang up the webs and get some serious couch time. However, I also felt I owed some debt of gratitude to the comic book I'd been reading for the last 20-some-odd years and decided to pick up the #600th issue. I had heard from reliable sources that after all the air cleared, and artist Chris Bachalo & writer Zeb Wells hopped on, things were getting better. Not too sure if I'm completely sold on returning to the monthly title just yet, but I do plan on picking up a trade or two from the last couple arcs. |
Oh, and you can thank D-Frag for planting this video in front of my face, which subsequently made $12 instantly disappear from my bank account. Thanks Frag. Any fan of Nintendo's Excitebike will probably run into the same problem.
